When is Microsoft Planner the better choice?

Microsoft Planner is the stronger fit when the priority is project work inside Microsoft Teams and an existing Microsoft 365 administration model. Planner runs on the web and in Microsoft Teams, and it needs an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. Since Project for the web retired on 1 August 2025, Planner’s premium plans are where Microsoft’s web scheduling features live.

Its current scheduling position is also clear: Planner Plan 1 adds the Timeline (Gantt), Calendar and People views. Plan 1 creates finish-to-start dependencies; Plan 3 adds advanced dependencies with lead and lag. Critical path needs Planner and Project Plan 3; Plan 1 does not include it.

The main qualification is equally important. Timeline requires a paid Planner license, critical path and baselines require the $30 Plan 3 tier, and a premium plan allows up to 3,000 tasks and 150 resources per project and 20 links per task.

Choose Microsoft Planner if: its surrounding workflow matters as much as the chart, its current plan limits match the real editor group, and the team has tested one representative project rather than comparing feature names alone.
