What is the best free Gantt chart software in 2026?

It depends on where the plan lives. For a shared online plan, use GanttFather or Ganttile: both are free without a trial, and both have dependencies and a critical path. For one computer, with baselines or Microsoft Project files, use GanttProject or ProjectLibre; to run the plan on your own server, use OpenProject Community.

“Free” means different things here: a permanent free plan with limits (GanttFather, Zoho Projects, TeamGantt, Agantty), a free web app (Ganttile, Online Gantt), open-source software you install (GanttProject, ProjectLibre, OpenProject Community), or a trial (ClickUp’s Gantt view). Compare the limit, not the label.

How do I choose the right free Gantt chart software?

Check these points in each free plan before you move a real project:

• Free or trial — is the free plan permanent, or does the Gantt view stop after a trial?
• Dependencies — which link types are there, and can you add lag?
• Critical path — does the free plan show which tasks set the end date?
• Baselines — can you save the original plan and compare it with what happened?
• Editors and viewers — how many people can edit, and do viewers cost anything?
• Project and task limits — how many projects and tasks fit in the free plan?
• Where the plan lives — in the browser, on your computer, or on your own server?
• Files in and out — Excel, Microsoft Project or PDF, and do the dependencies survive the trip?

What does each free plan include?

1. GanttFather — best for a shared plan with two editors and many viewers

GanttFather is a web app built around the Gantt chart. The free plan is 1 project you own, with 2 editors and unlimited free viewers. AI agents are free too, and no feature is locked to a paid plan. Each extra project is US$5 a month (US$2.50 a month billed yearly). An extra editor seat is US$2 a month (US$1 a month billed yearly).

When GanttFather is not the right choice:

• You need baselines to compare the plan with what happened. GanttFather has none; GanttProject and ProjectLibre do.
• You need .mpp files. GanttFather imports only an Excel file exported from Microsoft Project, without dependencies, and has no .mpp or XML.
• You work offline or on mobile apps. It is a web app only, with no mobile, desktop or offline version.
• You need many projects for free. Only 1 project you own is free. Ganttile and GanttProject have no project limit.

2. Ganttile — best for unlimited free projects online

Ganttile is a free web app from the team behind Breeze: everything is included, with no tiers and no per-user pricing, and projects and tasks are unlimited. It has dependencies (also across several projects in one chart), critical path, auto scheduling and milestones, and exports to Microsoft Project, PDF, Excel and image. You sign up with an email and password, or with Google. Its pages do not say which dependency types it supports, or whether it has baselines. See GanttFather vs Ganttile.

3. Online Gantt — best for a quick chart without an account

Online Gantt’s free editor runs in the browser with no sign-up and nothing to download. Free charts are saved on your own computer as .gantt files. Dependencies are written as predecessors, such as “1FS”. You can import Excel (.csv) and export to Excel, PDF and image.

The paid Cloud plans start at $4 per user a month, and the API needs the Pro plan. Read-only users and shared links are free on paid plans. Its pages do not mention critical path or baselines. See GanttFather vs Online Gantt.

4. GanttProject — best free desktop Gantt with baselines

GanttProject is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. It works offline, needs no account, and has no limit on projects, tasks, resources or users. It has the four dependency types with automatic scheduling, critical path, baselines and a resource load chart. It imports Microsoft Project MPX, MPP and XML files and exports XML.

The latest stable version is 3.3, released on 15 January 2024; 3.4 Beta VI came out on 14 September 2026. Sharing through GanttProject Cloud is optional and paid as you go, with no subscription. See GanttFather vs GanttProject.

5. ProjectLibre — best free desktop replacement for Microsoft Project

ProjectLibre Desktop is free and open source (CPAL 1.0), with no subscription. It is made for one person managing project files on their own computer, on Windows, macOS or Linux. It opens Microsoft Project files and has dependencies (finish-to-start by default, plus start-to-start and finish-to-finish, with lag in days), critical path, float, baselines and earned value.

The free app is for one person. ProjectLibre’s cloud plans start at $9.99 per user a month, billed annually. See GanttFather vs ProjectLibre.

6. OpenProject Community — best free Gantt on your own server

OpenProject’s Community edition is free to download and run on your own server, with DEB or RPM packages, Docker, or Kubernetes. It is open source under GPL-3.0, and there is no minimum number of users. Its Gantt chart tracks dependencies through predecessor and successor links, with lag in working days. It is actively released: version 17.9.2 came out on 15 October 2026.

OpenProject has no critical path yet, and the free baseline only compares with yesterday; comparing with any date and exporting the Gantt chart to PDF are Enterprise add-ons. You run the server and its upgrades yourself. Paid plans start at €5.95 per user a month, with 25 users minimum. See GanttFather vs OpenProject.

7. Zoho Projects — best free plan for a small team with phone apps

Zoho Projects’ free plan covers up to 5 users, 3 projects and 5 GB of storage, with iOS and Android apps. Its plan comparison lists the Gantt chart on every plan, including Free. On Free, task dependencies are finish-to-start within a project; Premium adds all four types and removes the project limit. Critical path and baselines need Enterprise or Ultimate. 8. TeamGantt — best for one small project

TeamGantt’s free Personal plan is for 1 user, 1 project and 40 tasks, with basic Gantt features including dependencies and drag-and-drop scheduling. Paid plans are a flat fee per account, not per user: Base is $59 a month, or $589 a year, for 1 manager, 10 collaborators and 5 projects. Business starts at $120 a month. Critical path is on every paid plan, and advanced dependencies need Business. A paid plan starts with a 14-day trial that asks for a card.

9. ClickUp — best when the Gantt chart is occasional

ClickUp’s Free Forever plan has unlimited members and 60 MB of storage, and task dependencies are on every plan. The Gantt view on Free is only a trial: uses add up across the Workspace and never reset. Full Gantt needs Unlimited, at $7 per user a month billed annually ($10 monthly), and critical path needs Business, at $12 ($19 monthly). ClickUp is also showing a new plan set in which Core costs $9 and Business $17, billed annually.

10. Agantty — best for one personal project

Agantty stays free for one project without a team. Its pricing page lists the free plan as a 14-day trial of every feature, then at most 1 project, with no teams and no support. Premium costs €4.90 a month or €50 a year per person, and adds unlimited projects, tasks and teams, CSV import, project templates and ticket support. Agantty offers free access to NGOs, non-profits, teachers and students who write to it.

The pricing page does not list dependency types or a critical path, and the newest post on Agantty’s home page is from October 2022.

When should you choose GanttFather first?

Choose GanttFather first when the plan has to live online, one or two people keep it up to date, and many others only need to see it. Viewers and AI agents are free, and dependencies and the critical path come with the free project. Choose another tool when you need baselines, .mpp files, offline work, mobile apps, self-hosting, or many projects at no cost.

Start with GanttFather’s free plan and rebuild one phase of a real project before you move a whole portfolio.
