When is Microsoft Project the better choice?

Microsoft Project is the stronger fit when the priority is desktop scheduling depth, baselines, lead and lag, and Microsoft portfolio work. Project desktop is a Windows app. Standard includes resource leveling; Professional adds full resource management and timesheets and can connect to Project Server Subscription Edition. The retirement of Project Online did not affect Project desktop, and Microsoft supports Project 2024 until 10 October 2029.

Its current scheduling position is also clear: Project desktop has Gantt Chart, Calendar, Network Diagram and Task Sheet views in both Standard and Professional. It supports all four dependency types (finish-to-start by default) with lead and lag. Critical path is included in Standard and Professional.

The main qualification is equally important. The product has a steeper learning curve and a higher price per user. Project Online, Microsoft’s cloud version, retired on 30 September 2026, so new work belongs in Project desktop, Planner’s premium plans or Project Server Subscription Edition.

Choose Microsoft Project if: its surrounding workflow matters as much as the chart, its current plan limits match the real editor group, and the team has tested one representative project rather than comparing feature names alone.

When is monday.com the better choice?

The tradeoff is not hidden. A Standard buyer can see a Gantt chart but needs Pro for dependencies and critical path, and with a 3-seat minimum a team of one or two still pays for three seats.
